Ellie Pincus & Suzanne Strauber General announcements: Upcoming Carnival Night for grades 6-8 on January 22nd. Grade 6: 6-7:30, Grades 7/8 8-9:30. Looking for parent volunteers to work/chaperone.

If interested in participating in the PTSA?  Positions will become available for the 2010-2011 school year.  Talk with Suzanne or Ellie for details.

Nancy Baker/Cathi Ward:  “ILT” is Instructional Leadership Team.  The team consists of faculty, administration & 2 parents.  The group meets 2 Tuesdays/month.  Discussed are issues about cutting edge education, plans and instructional goals; what is being taught and any and all school issues. An assessment of CRMS, student support, training needed within school and what is not working!  The parents serve a two year term and welcome new parents to become involved.

Amy Daniels:  Discussed 8th grade course selection for 9th grade over the next few months and visit to SHS on January 29th.

Carmine Peluso: Encouraged parents to take time to fill out Survey on District website home page - helps them evaluate how things are working.  On website until end of January. Talked about WEB - Where Everyone Belongs - new orientation program to be initiated next year. Eighth grade students will be partnered with incoming sixth grade students.

Scott Reinhart: Mentioned 8th grade Quebec trip weekend of January 15th:  35 kids going with Dr. Peluso.

A preview of what Sandy Stewart speaks on today: Discussed how important it is for parents and educators  to realize kids have an emotional and rational side to their brain. His focus is on learning how to develop and nurture these sides with kids and how to teach kids how to interact with each other and with adults.  We are helping raise human beings and we help them develop social skills with direction from us.

Sandy Stewart:  “The Teenage Brain” Sandy began with reading a teenage version of Goodnight Moon that was amusing to parents.   Sandy talked about recognized authors/or doctors who provide studies proving how underdeveloped teenage brains are and what part of the brain makes them function the way they do. Dr. Jay Giedd - NIH - completed the largest and longest study of the teenage brain. The pre-frontal cortex part of the brain is what makes kids tick and do crazy things. Sleep studies also prove that kids really do need to sleep longer, especially teenagers. Recommended the Book:
The Primal Teen by Barbara Strauch.  Showed a movie about The Teenage Brain.    If interested in obtaining a copy of the handout: What makes Teens Tick - contact Ellie Pincus or Suzanne Strauber.
